The economic & financial melt down never seems to stop gathering pace & rapid momentum does it. Now, you have all had as much of all that dismal gloom as a body can stand. I know I have…so please guys give us a break. We all know we are losing our hard accumulated wealth steadily day by day. However the slump is here & that’s about that! And I reckon it’s here to stay for quite a while. No, I dont wish to make your day any more dismal than it may have been…in fact I trust your day was a great one!

What I want to pass on to you, in these thrift needed days, is an idea about what we did recently to enjoy a great holiday…only 10 minutes by car from where we live. Now, I realise that concept is not rocket science. However when we told several people that we were going to stay at a local Resort at the Marina complex just several k’s away to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary, they looked a bit askance at that idea. I think we have all been brainwashed over the boom years into thinking we cannot enjoy an exciting holiday unless we are prepared to spend a mind numbing ten hours, in cramped confinement, aboard a Boeing 636, or whatever the thing is called…winging our way to the next country!

We made a booking for the Mindarie Quays Hotel Resort several weeks ahead as during January, they are very busy with Weddings! That surprised me as I did not think all that many people were still getting married these days?  On the appointed day we checked in at 2 pm. The one bedroom apartment was roomy, had an excellent balcony right over the cafe precint, & views to die for over the Indian ocean & Marina harbour.

That afternoon we relaxed, reading books, doing puzzles, doing some sketching & generally enjoyed being very lazy. Now; we were only 10 minutes away from our home by car…& yet in just a few hours I for one, was more relaxed than I ever could be on the home front. At home there is always a job hiding around the corner!

We sat out on the comfy balcony & watched the most glorious sunset over the ocean while enjoying a bottle of chilled chardonay. Then we walked the short distance down the stairs & enjoyed a delightful dinner at a cafe. That night I slept like a log. You see, that’s called relaxing! Next morning we slept in until 9.30 am…must definitely have been relaxed! Enjoyed a delicious brunch at another cafe in the marina complex. Then we went for a long walk out to the Groyne to see what the fishermen were catching. Not a lot as we found out. In fact nothing! I was glad I gave up fishing a few years ago!

That evening we had some friends meet us for drinks with us on the room balcony, then we all enjoyed an excellent evening at the Indian Restaurant. Once again still within the Marina! The Resort provides an 11 am checkout, so we were able to go down for a morning swim in the delightful Resort pool, still having ample time before we had to leave.

I really felt like I was in another country within the delights of the Mindarie marina Complex after being there for just a few short hours. By the end of the first night & day I could have been anywhere on the planet that provided luxurious surroundings, lots of cafes, a pool, ocean, marina, boats & so on. By the morning after the second night’s stay I really did not wish to depart. However all good things come to an end…even if it is only 10 minutes from home.

So next time you are thinking of where to spend a relaxing couple of days away from the rigours of the home front dont fly away thousands of kilometres…your perfect holiday is right in your own backyard!! And the greta bonus is it cost just a fragment of going on a long distance holiday. Have fun in the sun!
