Contemplating a holiday tour to Perth, Western Australia? Then you must place Rottnest Island on your list of must visit destinations. Rottnest island provides a wide range of spectacular ocean scenery and wild life. Visitors with time to spare can fish, go boating, swimming, snorkelling, view colourful coral and schools of fish from a submarine, and play 9 holes of golf.

The Island boasts excellent restuarant facilities. Regular coach tours around the expansive, spectacular coast, depart on a regular basis and are inexpensive.

I first visited Rottnest Island way back in the early 1950’s at about age 9 or 10. The island is situated some 18 kilometres west of the famous Western Australian port and harbour of Fremantle. Back in the distant past of my first holiday stay, Rottnest Island provided a basic, yet comfortable style of cottage accommodation. And back in the 1950’s we had the Island almost to ourselves.

I visited the Island infrequently over the next 40 years, mainly due to the difficulty of being able to book
accommodation. The Island has grown hugely in popularity to the point where in 2008, in order to obtain a booking in any of the very comfy accommodations now available, you need to apply for accommodation some 12 months in advance.

However you dont have to find accommodation if you only have time for a day trip to Rottnest island. You can take a day trip to the Island via one of the Cruise ships that leave from either Perth city, Fremantle Port; or Hillarys Boat Harbour, situated some 20 kilometres to the north west of Perth city. You need to allocate a full day for the trip taking a cruiser which departs early morning and returns late afternoon.

During the winter months between June and August the weather can be very wet and windy, with rough seas. This can make the crossing from Fremantle to Rottnest very unpleasant. Having made the crossing in rough weather I would not repeat the experience. Plan your holiday to Perth between September and April. The famous afternoon strong sea breeze known as the Fremantle Doctor, so called due to the relief it brings to Perth during 30 degree centigrade + heat, can make the return journey blustery.
