Last week we travelled south to Mandurah from Perth WA;to spend a couple of nights in Mandurah staying in resort splendour in apartments at Mandurah Seashells Resort. This resort opened a couple of years ago. We have stayed there several times due to the high quality of accommodation, excellent service & “in beach” lifestyle.

The Seashells Resort is situated in the new marina complex on the coastal beaches just to the west of Mandurah City. The resort backs onto pristine white beaches. Providing you book a two bedroom apartment you will be assured of a position that enjoys panoramic views over the Indian Ocean and adjacent beaches.

When staying in Mandurah you will find plenty of activities to make your stay a memorable one. The following list of great places to visit while visiting Mandurah will assist you with your travel day plans:

Port Bouvard Mandurah – is around 12 kilometres south of Mandurah on the main highway south to Bunbury. Port Bouvard is adjacent to the man made Dawesville Cut. The Cut is a long, wide canal connecting the Mandurah Estuary to the Indian Ocean. The main reason the Dawesville Cut was created was to provide a system for moving water from the estuary to the ocean & vice versa. Otherwise the estuary would have turned into a massive stagnant pond.

Meadow Springs Country Golf Club – This destination is for the golfers out there. Over the years I have enjoyed several rounds of golf around this magnificent world class golf course. Situated just a short drive north of Mandurah; Meadow Springs Country Club is well worth the visit.

Mandurah Quays – Only a couple of kilometres south of Mandurah City, on the edge of the magnificent estuary, the Quays is well worth a visit. You will enjoy excellent dining facilities or coffee & cake, at the enticing Cafe/Restuarant with magnificent views over the estuary & boat harbour. The lovely homes built around the Quays are worth the visit.

Dawesville Cut – South of Mandurah you can enjoy fishing from the rocks that form the edge of the Cut and also enjoy excellent dining or coffee & cake at either the Jolly Frog or the Cut Restuarants. The views from both venues are excellent. Fishermen have a chance to catch herring, taylor, and whiting for starters.

Mandurah City – Offers numerous cafes and restuarants dotted along the waterfront. Cuisine varies from simple Fish & Chips to Italian, Mexican, Greek, and Indian cuisine. I have dined at most of these restuarants & they are excellent.

Mandurah Ocean Marina - This is my favourite place & where the Seashells Resort is located. The Marina offers Ninos’ Fish & Chips, Italian, Asian, etc; restuarants situated in the opulence of a huge boat harbour, attractive two story apartments and delightufl views.

I trust the foregoing provides you with a few ideas as to how to enjoy your holiday in Mandurah.

In recent years Western Australia has experienced one of the biggest affluency booms during the past 20 years. As a result of this never ending boom period major holiday centers such as in Mandurah, Australia; has experienced a significant building “boom” keeping up with the demand for superior quality holiday accommodation. The Mandurah to Perth rail system was completed in 2007 due to the massive increase in Mandurah’s population.

The new Mandurah Hotels are invariably luxurious establishments, which, surprisingly on a world scale are still very affordable. The following may assist you to select some fabulous resort style hotels to enjoy your holiday in Western Australia:

Mandurah

Mandurah, some 80 kilometres south of Perth is the fastest growing region in Australia. This region used to be considered the relaxed, casual, low cost holiday area for Perthites to enjoy their annual holidays at one of a number of caravan parks or tent parks located in a ten kilometre radius of Mandurah central.

Accommodation in Mandurah is at a premium. Bouvard Mandurah to the south of the main city of central Mandurah, is now packed with huge homes, apartments and a few tremendous restuarants, such as the Jolly Frog, right on the water’s edge. Real estate in Mandurah went through a boom period with prices often tripling between 2000 to 2006. However the lower end of the market has cooled during 2007 and 2008. The high end of the market still commands million dollar prices.

For sale in Mandurah signs are now in much abundance compared to 2004 when properties for sale were in short supply. Mandurah Quays is well worth a visit to view spectacular homes set around a delightful Marina situated on a picturesque estaury.

In tourism Mandurah has every conceivable attraction. Numerous glorious beaches, an enormous estuary ideal for boating, kyacking, fishing and crabbing. The estuary forms a gorgeous fast flowing river that passes through the center of Mandurah township, eventually flowing between a pair of rocky groynes into the Indian ocean. And at night the multi coloured lights from all the new buildings and town create a wonderful ambience for an evening out in this bustling coastal, river town. Meadow Springs Golf Club in the north eastern suburbs of Mandurah is superb. As is the new Golf Club & Resort at Bouvard just over the Dawesville Cut south of the Mandurah Island region.

You can enjoy a BBQ in ideal settings during most of the year in beach regions of Mandurah that are perfect. The beach to the east of Falcon offers white sands, crystal clear water, a park and a few delightful BBQ areas for your enjoyment. This beach faces north and as a result is protected from the strong sea breezes that blow from the south west.

That is no longer the case which is bemoaned by many Perthites as Mandurah, like many similar regional coastal holiday centers, has literally undergone an explosion of constant demolishing of the old establishments and rebuilding with resorts and quays packed with restaurants, shops and exquisite hotel resorts. I lived in Mandurah from 2001 to 2004 and I can assure the reader that Mandurah is no longer the relaxed holiday destination that we enjoyed back in 2001!

The peaceful, grassy areas that used to surround the northern and western town foreshores have gone. In their place now stand an enormous concert Hall, cafes and restuarants on the river banks, and cinemas. On the western shore they are currently building an enormous multi story Holiday Resort where the old and famous Peninsula Hotel and a caravan park used to be major attractions.

Well; thats the price of progress…aint it! However, I have to admit that Mandurah is now an exciting five star town with accommodation to die for, still at affordable prices..for now anyway. Plus Mandurah offers stacks of things to enjoy on your holiday. While in Mandurah ensure that you take a couple of river boat tours through the canals. You will view exquisite multi story mansions on each side of nurmerous canal developments. Or book a cruise up the Murray River for a delightful day on the river, and estuary, including an excellent lunch at one of the hotels along the way.

You can also hire a boat for your own use and do your own thing. Or if you are into fishing try your luck in any of the numerous water ways or the ocean. Between approx late November and end of March hire a boat and some crabbing gear and catch yourself some excellent tasty blue manna crabs in the estuary. Be warned though that the Fisheries Department have strict catch quotas. There are now seasonal restrictions as well, so get your facts right first or you will cop a huge fine!!

Okay, by now you can see that Mandurah should be included in your tour itinerary to the Perth region. Where to stay? I guess the answer to that question depends on your budget. However if you enjoy quality accommodation the following would be my choice.

In resort style accommodation, Mandurah offers a number of exquisite properties in apartments equal to anywhere in Australia.

Just over two years old, the “Seashells Resort” situated in the tremendous new Quays only 1.5 kilometres from central Mandurah is superb. The Resort is right on the pure white sandy beach with curling green breakers rolling in from the Indian Ocean. The Resort offers a divine large pool overooking the ocean. I stayed there a few months ago and highly recommend the Seashells. In order to have an exquisite, never ending ocean view, I believe you need to book a two bedroom apartment.

The apartment we enjoyed overlooked the ocean. The apartments are decorated with high quality fittings, beautifully presented and are fully self contained…full kitchen facilities, two bathrooms, lounge, large outdoor patio and…well absolutely stunning.

The fact that the Seashells Resort Hotel is situated within the new Quays is an added bonus. You can easily walk the couple of hundred metres from Seashells to a number of superb cafes and restaurants overlooking harbours and jetties.

Absolutely stunning. Enjoy…but remember… you must book well in advance.

Further reviews of places to stay in Western australia will follow in a few days.
