Fremantle Australia is one of the most famous settlement towns on the Australian coastline. Many of the original buildings constructed with the assistance of convict labour back in the early 18th century have been lovingly restored.

Make sure you include at least a day or two in your itinerary travel plans when touring Western Australia. If you plan to stay for a night or more in Fremantle make sure you book your accommodation well in advance. This is a very busy place!

I highly recommend the famous Esplanade Hotel situated in South Fremantle, within an easy walk to all the historic sites, the fabulous Fishing Boat harbour & the Cappucino Strip. This Hotel is exquisite with it’s old world charm. Accommodation is of the highest standard as is the service.

Not far from the Esplanade Hotel you will find:

WA Maritime Museum – View an amazing array of historical artifacts relating to the early days of settlement in WA. This is a must see!

Round House – This fully restored old prison of the convict settlement days, situated in the old west end of Fremantle is well worth a visit.

Fremantle Prison – Now this is one for the books. You can book to enjoy an excellent meal in the restuarant of the old Fremantle Prison. Then take a tour through this spooky old building. This prison was only closed in recent times. An excellent all round excursion not to be missed.

Fishing Boat Harbour – Another must see destination. Only a short walksouth of the Esplanade Hotel, Fishing Boat Harbour provides stacks of cafes, restuarants, with both indoor and outdoor dining. You can enjoy a simple but excellent serving of fish & chips, or choose from a myriad of cuisines.

Cappucino Strip – Again only a short walk from the Esplanade Hotel enjoy a session of enjoying the food of your choice at any one of numerous cafes, or enjoy a boutique ale at the Sail & Anchor Hotel. You will also find the best coffee houses on the planet along the strip.

Fremantle Markets – Fantastic array of 150 + stalls under covered areas where you can buy almost anything youy heart desires. Full of character & characters, the Markets are open Friday to Sunday & Public Holidays. The Markets are opposite the Sail & Anchor Hotel. Wear your feet out enjoying the Markets then visit the Sail & Anchor to put your feet up for a rest and enjoy their boutique beers & ales.

E-Shed Markets – Large undercover markets right on the wharf of Fremantle Harbour. These are a bit further away so you might need to drive, or geta bus or taxi.

Fremantle Perth Railway – In the event you wish to visit Perth City while staying in Fremantle there is an excellent rail service to & from Perth. The trip only takes some 15 minutes one way.

Cottesloe & South Beach – Again you will need transport to travel the several k’s to visit these pristine beach’s. Cottesloe is still very old worldy, and has a number of cafes/restuarants overlooking the beach. Well worth the short trip. Make sure you take your bathers if you visit on a hot summer day!

If you are a football fanatic, although keep in mind that Aussie Rules does not use a “round” ball as in soccer, you might like to visit Fremantle Oval, the home of one of WA’s two Australian Football League teams, the Fremantle Dockers.

I would think these destinations will more than fill your time while staying in Fremantle, WA for a couple of days. Have fun!
